Getting Kids to Listen the First Time - A Not to Miss Session!

At St. Matthew’s Weekday School, we know that getting children to listen the first time can feel like a challenge for many parents. Whether it’s asking them to put away their toys or get ready for bed, we’ve all experienced those moments of repeating instructions and wondering if our words are getting through. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Parent Engagement Session on October 16th at 7 PM, where we’ll explore strategies to foster positive listening habits in our little ones!

What to Expect:

During this interactive session, our experienced director, Ms. Shirley, will share research-backed techniques and practical tips for encouraging children to listen and respond the first time—without frustration or raised voices. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the topics we’ll be covering:

  • Understanding the “Why” Behind Not Listening: Learn about common reasons children may not respond right away and how developmental stages play a role in their behavior.

  • Effective Communication Strategies: Discover tools like the “Say It Once and Pause” method, using non-verbal cues, and creating routines that support clear communication.

  • Creating a Cooperative Environment at Home: Explore ways to set expectations and boundaries that invite cooperation, mutual respect, and better listening.

There will also be time for open discussion, where you can share your own experiences and ask questions specific to your child’s needs. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for parents to learn, connect, and walk away with fresh ideas to try at home.

Why Attend?

Parenting is a journey, and we believe in growing together as a community. This session is not just about learning new strategies—it’s about coming together to understand our children better and build positive relationships with them. Whether you’re a parent of a toddler who’s just finding their voice or a preschooler eager to assert their independence, this workshop will offer valuable insights for all.
